Work has begun on site at the ASB theatre. Stage 1 of a 2 stage construction began in late October on a project that when complete will result in a completely remodelled theatre. The new theatre will have new state of the art lyric theatre seating, new acoustic wall and ceiling panelling along with new lighting, mechanical and electrical services. When complete the new theatre will be the nation’s premier lyric and performing arts venue.
Demolition has begun on the new stalls floor, a challenging operation involving cutting the existing floor into sections that can be transported out of the theatre. An enormous bird cage scaffold structure has been built within the existing theatre to allow for the demolition and construction of the high level elements to be carried out at the same time as the low level work allowing the contractor to effectively run two construction teams at the same time. Stage 1 is due for completion towards the end of March.
